Demographics of terror and joy!

I installed Google Analytics on my blog for fun, and then I found the 'Demographics' tab.

My word! Firstly, it's a bit of guesswork on Google's part, but judging by browsing habits, you lot are 100% male. Not even 0.1% female. I mean, maybe that'll change over time, but for now Google's pretty sure May's visitors have been guys. [UPDATE: yeah Google now reckons it's more like 6% female, which is healthier guesswork]

Secondly, look at that graphic! We're apparently all single, male, 18-25 year old unemployed hardcore gamers! Amazing. Incorrect.

Does gaming lead to dreaming of scifi scenarios? Do we flit between employment sites and reading comics? Does being a gamer or a technophile mean you're a bloke? Google seems to think it does. Does being a bit of a dreamer mean you'll be unemployed? Do we watch too much TV and then go straight to dating websites to find the next relational fix?

Golly, the human race and our rough analyses eh? What we can decide from this couple of weeks of vague guesswork is that ... err ... nothing really.

But if you do happen to be unemployed, a bit of a dreamer, looking for love or all of the above then I have a message for you! Have hope! I currently do an amazing job which stretches my brain and leaves me space to think and breathe and be creative - but that wasn't always the case.

I was unemployed for a long, looong time. You measure it in weeks, then months, then when it gets over the 12 months stage and you start doing crap jobs it starts to get to you, but it can turn around. I ended up doing the wrong job in the right industry, the overqualified minimum-wage dirtbag job. But staying humble and working on initiative meant I quickly moved through different parts of the same industry.

So if you're feeling stuck, wasting time, aimless, take courage! You can do it! Ooonf!!!! I understand that confidence can get knocked, but the dreamers and the technophiles and the geeks have something that the rest of the go-get-em extrovert normal people don't - we might be slow to sell ourselves but we have an exceptional understanding of processes and ethics and an emotional depth that gives us greater potential than a thousand straight-to-employment straight-to-relationships seemingly sorted people have. But the first step is to get off your arse and take responsibility, young man!

Come on now, I'll withhold the next comic if you don't at least apply for one job. Yes it can be a crap one. No you can't spend the money on anything with a USB or HDMI port or four propellers.

And get a shower for fuck's sake! You're worth scrubbing up. You are.

You are.

An inspiring message from a CG pornographer... Well hey, I'll take it.

Haha! Not sure I'd self-identify as a CG pornographer - it's more a stupid occasional hobby (otherwise the comics would be waaay more frequent). :)

[Shoots the 'The More you Know' star across the screen and gets rainbow glitter all over the fucking place.]

Opps. Sorry about that. Forgot about the glitter. Not that it will help much, but I'll get the vacuum...

Excellent inspiring speech! If I weren't already employed I know I'd be stirred to at least get into some motion. That's often the most difficult part, that initial start. The whole Newton's law of an object that is at rest tends to remain at rest - it applies to life too.
So folks out there, shake thing up a bit. Find something that inspires you and seize upon it (for example a speech at the top of this page?). Do one thing this week you want to but didn't do last week. Baby steps lead to more and larger steps.
Oh, and if you need it, seek out counseling and/or other help. There's such a stigma in so much of the world against seeking mental health assistance and just generally asking for help of any kind. Reach out. Remind yourself that there are those who can and will help.
Sorry. Soapbox mode: off. Thanks again for the kind words. I mean it when I say it is a stirring and insightful presentation.

Yeah, not sure we know any more - Google's demographics seem largely quesswork.

*insert thumbs-up icon here*

Yeah I guess this was more a chance for me to acknowledge a difficult part in my life, unemployment, rather than a real study of Google's vague demographics. But if it helps even one person to know there is light at the end of the tunnel, then good times :)

Ditto the thing about mental health too - I had to learn to look after myself, definitely

You could open a Patreon if you haven't yet.

Nope not me. I'm 41, disabled and an artist. You are one of my biggest inspirations. Don't have an account here. I do on DA. -- Tora-no-shi1369

^ that's something people have mentioned before. Good idea, I've opened a basic one, will have to figure out how to make it look better.

Aw cool! I love being any sort of inspiration, let alone a big one! Thanks man :)

Demographics update: Google Analytics have decided there ARE women on my blog, plenty of them. Let's see if their age brackets sort themselves out as well.
